Scattered on the Skreet

This morning, my doggie and I were on our way to the dog park and we decided to make a quick stop at the QT for some ghetto-ccino.  Just as I was turning into the massive convience store, I notices a beat up blue box on the road.  Even as a non-drinker, I recognized that this box had been a case of Miller Lite cans in a former life.

The beat up piece of blue cardboard got me thinking of the things that we see on the road so often.  There seems to be a pattern,  at least in my world.  Beer trash (this would include bottles, cans, bottle caps, and the boxes that they once came in),  the random single shoe or boot,  broken CDs,  and ball caps seem to be the most common.  This train of thought brought the realization that one type of roadside trash that was once so common and so curious to me is now seemingly extinct.  That would be the mysterious ribbons of VHS or Cassette tape that I used to see hopelessly tangled up, littering intersections everywhere.

I have to wonder how these things end up in the gutters and medians.  I see so many single shoes,  yet rarely do I run into anyone wearing only one shoe.  Is losing a shoe a danger for one driving down the street?  Do people get tired of a CD and while stopped at an intersection, snap in in half and toss it out the window?  That’s a strange thought.  I often get tired of listening to a certain CD, but I just put it in the back of the rotation and have faith that I will enjoy it again later after we’ve had a break from one another.  I see so many hats on the road,  yet don’t see enough convertibles to explain them.  What would prompt a person to suddenly throw their hat on the road?   When I get a good ball cap,  it’s precious.  maybe people look in the rear-view mirror and realize the particular hat they’re wearing looks ridiculous and decide to just chuck it.

Most disturbing is the beer trash. It means people are drinking and driving, doesn’t it?  I’m afraid it’s entirely possible, but I won’t go there.  Another blog for another day.

I miss the tangled video tape… I wish I would have known it was about to become extinct. Perhaps then I would have been more motivated to figure out where it all was coming from.

Hand-Slaps.
